Windows Cannot Installed To This Disk Windows 10 Solution – It turns out that installing Windows 10 is not as easy as previous versions of Windows (Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8). Some people (including me) have experienced not being able to install Windows 10 on a laptop, and usually it says Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI system Windows can only be installed to GPT disks.
Why can this happen?. Due to the increasingly high technology embedded in laptops today, it is different from old laptops.
Before going further, why can’t we install windows, surely you’ve heard the term UEFI or commonly called UEFI boot mode, right?. Besides UEFI there is also a Legacy mode. Both terms commonly used in the BIOS. The point is legacy technology is old school technology and will replaced with UEFI (for hardware security).
For now, Microsoft recommends using UEFI boot mode to install Windows 10.
In addition to the two terms boot mode, you also need to know the term hard drive partition. Yes, to be able to install Windows 10, you must pay attention to the type of hard drive partition that Windows will install. There are two types of hard disk partitions, namely MBR and GPT. In essence, MBR is the old type of partition, while GPT is the latest type.
Here’s the problem, it turns out that between boot mode and partition type are interrelated and will affect when installing windows. At that time I failed to install windows 10 with the statement “Windows cannot installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI system Windows can only installed to GPT disks“.

In short, why the error because I use UEFI boot while my hard drive partition is still MBR.
Fix Windows Cannot Installed
- Change the boot mode to Legacy by entering the BIOS and selecting Legacy. Save settings and exit. Please install windows 10 again.
- Convert partition from MBR to GPT. You can change it via the command prompt. I don’t recommend this method, because the effect is format your hard drive. Better to use the first method.
Sometimes we get error “Windows cannot installed to this disk”. The selected disk has an GPT partition table. On BIOS system Windows can only installed to MBR disks“. If you get information like that, just change the bios to UEFI mode.
The point is this
If the partition is MBR use Legacy boot
If the partition is GPT use UEFI boot.
I hope this helps 🙂
